Each GMB Challenge is a focused, standalone sustainability action designed to be practical and achievable for organisations. Challenges sit outside the CORE module — they are an additional way to take action and maintain momentum between your CORE work.

Switch Off October
A focused month-long challenge to reduce unnecessary energy use across your organisation.
Why it matters
Organisations use energy-intensive equipment throughout the day. Small changes — switching off idle equipment, managing lighting and heating, and engaging the team — can add up to a meaningful reduction in energy waste and carbon footprint.
How to complete
Review your organisation’s energy use, identify equipment that can be switched off when not in active use, and engage your team in a month-long effort to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
Task instructions
1. Audit your organisation for equipment left on when not in use. 2. Create a simple switch-off checklist for each area. 3. Engage the team and track your progress throughout October.
